For commercial growers, pest control is an ongoing challenge. A single infestation of thrips, aphids, or whiteflies can spread disease, destroy foliage, and reduce yield quality. Installing insect screens over greenhouse vents offers a reliable, pesticide-free barrier that keeps harmful bugs out.

However, many growers overlook a critical trade-off: the tighter the mesh, the harder it is for fresh air to move through your greenhouse.

Understanding how insect screens affect airflow helps growers maintain healthy humidity, stable temperatures, and high-yielding crops year-round.

Why Insect Screens Restrict Greenhouse Airflow

Natural cooling in greenhouses depends on fresh air entering through sidewall vents and hot air escaping through roof vents.

When you cover vents with insect netting, air must force its way through thousands of tiny holes. This causes airflow resistance. If your screens are too fine or improperly sized:

·         Internal Heat Builds Up: Hot air gets trapped inside during peak solar hours.

·         Humidity Spikes: Stagnant air leads to high humidity, creating prime conditions for fungal diseases like powdery mildew and Botrytis.

·         CO₂ Depletion: Insufficient fresh air exchange starves plants of the carbon dioxide needed for optimal photosynthesis.

Practical Checklist: Choosing the Ideal Insect Screen

To protect crops without suffocating the greenhouse, evaluate these three factors:

1. Identify Your Primary Pest Threat
Choose your mesh size based on the specific pests common in your region:
• 40 Mesh: Ideal for larger pests like moths, leafminers, and larger aphids. Offers higher airflow.
• 50 Mesh: Standard protection against whiteflies and most aphid species.
• 50+ Mesh (Ultra-Fine): Required for small thrips, but restricts airflow significantly.

2. Check the Screen's Porosity
Look for high-porosity nets woven with ultra-strong, thin synthetic threads. Two screens with the exact same 50-mesh rating can have vastly different airflow rates depending on thread thickness.

3. Adjust Vents to Match Resistance
If you install fine insect screens on existing vents, you may need to increase vent opening angles, extend roof vent openings, or use circulation fans to maintain adequate air circulation.

Tailoring Screen Setup by Crop Type

Different crops have unique growing requirements:

·         Leafy Greens & Lettuce: Sensitive to heat accumulation; prioritizing airflow with moderate mesh sizing is often key.

·         Vegetable Production (Tomatoes, Peppers, Cucumbers): Benefit from 50-mesh screening to block viral vectors like whiteflies while keeping humidity balanced.

·         Nursery & Seedling Operations: Require high-density screening to protect young, vulnerable shoots from early pest infestation.
